Swimming at Manor House School, Bookham is an integral and much‑loved part of our EYFS provision, supporting children’s physical, social, and emotional development in a fun, nurturing, and confidence‑building environment. Each week, our Nursery children take a short minibus ride to Cranmore School, an Independent School in Horsley, Surrey to take part in carefully structured swimming sessions designed specifically for young learners who are beginning to explore the water. These sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for children to develop early swimming skills while also strengthening important developmental foundations.
During their time in the pool, children gradually build confidence, coordination, and water awareness through playful, age‑appropriate activities. They learn how to move safely in the water, float, kick, and use their arms, all while developing key personal skills such as listening, independence, and resilience. The routine of changing, travelling, and participating in a structured lesson also helps children grow in responsibility and self‑care, giving them a sense of achievement and pride.
Lessons are taught in small groups by qualified swimming instructors who understand the needs of early learners. Familiar nursery staff accompany the children throughout the experience, offering reassurance, encouragement, and continuity. This supportive combination ensures that every child feels secure, valued, and able to progress at their own pace.
Beyond the physical benefits, swimming contributes significantly to children’s emotional wellbeing. Many children experience a sense of joy and freedom in the water, and the shared experience strengthens friendships and social confidence. By introducing swimming at an early age, we aim to foster positive attitudes towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
