At Manor House School in Bookham, we believe that a child’s happiness and sense of security are the foundations for successful learning. Within our Prep School in Surrey (Reception to Year 6), pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We pride ourselves on creating a warm, nurturing environment where every child feels valued and supported.

Our small class sizes allow teachers to know each pupil as an individual, understanding their strengths, interests, and any challenges they may face. This personal approach means we can respond quickly to their needs and help them develop resilience and confidence. We encourage open communication between pupils, staff, and parents, fostering a strong sense of community.

Wellbeing is woven into daily life. Through our PSHRSE curriculum, ELSA chats and regular form times, pupils learn to express themselves, manage emotions, and build positive relationships. Outdoor learning and play are also integral, giving children space to explore, collaborate, and enjoy the natural surroundings of our beautiful grounds. These experiences help pupils develop independence and a sense of responsibility while maintaining a healthy balance between academic and personal growth.

Our pastoral care extends beyond the classroom. We have a dedicated team of staff who monitor wellbeing and provide support when needed. Whether it’s through buddy systems or simply being available to listen, we ensure that every child feels safe and understood. We also work closely with parents to create a consistent approach to wellbeing, reinforcing positive habits and emotional resilience at home and school.

Our aim is simple: to ensure every child feels happy, safe, and ready to learn. By prioritizing pastoral care and wellbeing in the Prep years, we prepare our pupils not only for academic success but for life beyond the classroom, confident, compassionate, independent and equipped to thrive. This strong foundation means that when they move into Senior School, they do so with the skills and mindset to embrace new challenges and opportunities.
