Year 6 girls from Manor House School, Bookham have proudly completed their Bikeability course, showcasing confidence, responsibility, and growing independence as cyclists. As an independent school in Bookham, Surrey, we place great importance on equipping pupils with practical life skills that extend beyond the classroom, and this course was a valuable opportunity to do just that.

Over the training period, pupils worked with qualified Bikeability instructors, from Surrey County Council, to develop essential road safety skills. You may have seen them navigating the streets of Bookham, putting their learning into action in real-life situations. The girls practised reading road signs, understanding junctions, obeying the rules of the road, and communicating clearly with other road users. Their confident use of hand signals, careful observations, and calm decision-making ensured they were able to return to school safely and sensibly.

Bikeability gives children the tools they need to cycle responsibly on today’s roads. Throughout the course, the girls learned how to assess risk, manage traffic situations, and ride with control and awareness. These are skills that will serve them well as they grow more independent, both on and off their bikes.

The enthusiasm and maturity shown by the group were impressive. Pupils supported one another, listened carefully to instructions, and embraced new challenges with positivity and focus. It was wonderful to see their confidence increase with each session.

As a school proud to be based in the village of Bookham in leafy surrey, we value our strong connection to the local community and encourage pupils to move safely and responsibly within it.

Well done to our Year 6 girls for completing Bikeability and for representing the school so confidently around Bookham.

Next for them, the Olympic route up Box Hill!
