What to Look for in a Private Prep School

Posted: 8th June 2026

With so many excellent independent schools in Surrey, knowing what to look for in a private prep school can feel like a challenge in itself. Every school will tell you it is warm, nurturing and academically strong, and many of them genuinely are. But beneath the surface, there are specific qualities that separate a good prep school from a truly exceptional one. At Manor House School, we believe that transparency is important, so here is our honest guide to what families should be looking for, and why.

Small class sizes that make a real difference

Class size is not just a number, it shapes the entire learning experience. In a smaller class, teachers can identify how each pupil learns, spot gaps in understanding early and tailor their approach accordingly. Pupils who might otherwise go under the radar get the attention and encouragement they deserve. At Manor House, our class sizes allow our teachers to genuinely know every pupil, and that individual attention is something families consistently highlight when they tell us why they chose us.

Specialist teaching from an early age

In many state primary schools, one teacher covers most or all subjects. In a good private prep school, specialist teachers deliver subjects they are passionate and highly qualified in, from science and mathematics to music, languages and PE. This makes a meaningful difference to the quality of teaching and to how engaged pupils are in their learning. At Manor House, specialist teaching is a core part of how we deliver our prep school curriculum, and our pupils benefit from expert input across the full range of subjects.

A genuine commitment to wellbeing

Academic rigour is important, but not at the expense of happiness. A good independent prep school in Surrey will have a clear, proactive approach to pastoral care and pupil wellbeing, not just responding to problems when they arise, but creating an environment where pupils feel safe, supported and able to ask for help. Our pastoral care and wellbeing provision at Manor House is something we are genuinely proud of, and it is one of the first things prospective parents comment on when they visit.

Strong extra-curricular provision

The hours outside the timetable are where so much of a child’s character is formed. Look for a prep school that offers a rich and varied extra-curricular programme, one that gives pupils the chance to discover new interests, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and simply enjoy being part of a busy, creative school community. From sport and drama to art and outdoor learning, Manor House offers pupils a full and enriching school life beyond the academic.

Transparent results and destinations

A school that is confident in its academic outcomes will share them openly. Look at published KS2 results, ask about senior school destinations and find out how the school supports pupils through the transition at eleven. At Manor House, our pupils go on to a wide range of excellent senior schools, and we are proud of the breadth as well as the quality of those destinations. Manor House School is part of the Effingham Schools Trust, with girls transitioning across to St Teresa’s for Year 7. Boys will have transitioned to Cranmore in Year 3.

Financial support and accessibility

For many families, fees are a genuine consideration. A good private prep school should be clear about its fee structure and transparent about the financial support available. At Manor House, we offer scholarships and bursaries to ensure that talented pupils from a range of backgrounds have the opportunity to be part of our community. We would always encourage families to ask, you may find the school is more accessible than you expected.
