Sports Update – Summer 2017

Athletics

The Junior and Senior Athletics teams have enjoyed many successes this season. The Year 5 and 6 teams won against Rowan Preparatory. The Year 4 and 5 teams won against St. Teresa’s, Notre Dame and Tormead and we won overall.

In these events there were wins from Annika Rosenberg, Jessica Haines, Natasha Weiner, Elin Roberts, Jessica Schindler, Fleur Pinnington-Jones, Sacha King, Ella Stephens and our U10 & U11 relay teams.

All members of the Junior Athletics club went to St. Catherine’s for a fun, all inclusive event to give them an experience of various run, jumps and throws.

The highlight of the Junior season was the West Surrey Prep Schools where girls from Year 4 to Year 8 competed against 16 other schools. Elin Roberts was the most successful that day winning both the High Jump and 100m and coming 2nd in the Long Jump. Jessica Haines competed well to come 2nd in the 75m, both Jessie Schindler & Ella Stephens were 3rd in their respective age group in the Long Jump. The U11 relay team were also 3rd.

The Seniors have taken part in friendly matches against CLFS and Tormead where the U14 team were 2nd and against St. Teresa’s & Notre Dame where the U13 team won. They also competed against Epsom College, Hurstpierpoint and Eastbourne College and the U14 were convincing winners.

There have been individual wins at these events from Molly Marshall, Caitlin Willis, Maya Pendrill-Adams, Gracie Stoker, Verity Pinnington-Jones, Naomi Townend, Annie Rye Blakey, Tilly Baker and our U13, U14 & U15 relay teams.

At the West Surrey Prep Schools in which our Years 7 and 8 took part,  Verity was 2nd in the Long Jump and 3rd in the 200m. Naomi was 2nd in the Hurdles and Alice Pidgeon was 2nd in the High Jump. Our relay team was 3rd. Naomi, Alice and Elin Roberts were all selected to represent West Surrey at the National Prep Schools Finals.

At the District Athletics our U14 team were 3rd and Verity and Caitlin won their events, Molly, Gracie and our relay team were 2nd and Naomi was 3rd.  All these girls were selected to represent Central Surrey at the Surrey Schools Athletics Championships. Verity came joint 2nd in the High Jump and went on to represent Surrey at an Inter County match.

Thank you to all the athletes who have competed so well all season and to the staff and girls who have helped out officiating at events.

Rounders

This season we have not been disrupted too much by the rain. In fact we did have one night of matches cancelled due to extreme heat. Hence, the girls have been able to enjoy a number of Rounders matches, some ‘Come and Play’ Sessions and their District Tournaments.

A large number of girls have taken part in matches from Years 4 to 11. The Juniors enjoyed wins against Rydes Hill, Rowan Prepartory, Milbourne Lodge and Eastwick. The U11 team were particularly successful, only losing one game this season. Their biggest win was 12 ½ rounders – 6 ½ against Eastwick.

The Seniors have had wins against The Howard of Effingham, The Ashcombe School, Claremont Fan Court, Notre Dame School, St. Teresa’s and CLFS. Noteworthy successes include the U14A’s 10-3 win and U16’s 18-6 against The Ashcombe. The U14B’s beat CLFS 17-10 ½ and the U15’s were proud of their 23-8 win against Claremont Fan Court.

At the District Tournament we were very consistent with our U13B, U14A, U14B and U15A teams all coming 3rd.

This year we have been very lucky to have Mr. Percival helping with the Rounders practices. His baseball skills have transferred very well to Rounders and he has been fundamental in helping the girls improve their fielding skills, an area that has really improved across all teams. Thank you very much for your help, Mr Percival.

Tennis

This summer we entered our U15 and U13s teams into the Surrey School’s League and they played well against schools from further afield and of a very high standard.  Other age groups also played in friendly matches in various combinations of agreed games and sets from U15s to U10s.  Some junior matches were also played in fun versions where the pairs play for a set amount of time instead against the opposition.  Our U14s won the most matches and our U12 team won by the highest score of all and the U10s ended up drawing one.

Our top pair in each of the U13/14 and 15 teams had a great day out at St Georges playing in the Surrey School’s Festival day.

We had quite a lot of entries for the Family Beckwith Cup tournament this year but sadly in the end, once again rain stopped play.  Hopefully they will all enter again next time.

We got tickets in the ballot for Wimbledon this year. Nine lucky Year 10s had a great day out spending time watching play sat mainly on Court 1 plus other matches from other courts and Henman Hill.  This was the last time that the Manor House Marrows could be spotted at Wimbledon!

We hope that more of you will join our school coaching sessions with Jose after school or take up tennis at a local club. Hopefully we will have enough competent pairs to compete in the Surrey School’s League once again next year.
