Chinese New Year is today, Monday 8th February. Last month, girls from Year 1 to Year 6 took part in workshops to learn more about Chinese New Year. These workshops were delivered by ‘Dragons in Europe’, the UK’s specialist provider of Mandarin Chinese teachers and teaching materials to schools.
During these workshops, the girls found out about Chinese culture, the geography of China and traditional Chinese New Year practices.
Mandarin is the most spoken first language on the planet and the girls were taught key phrases such as “hello”, “thank you” and “teacher”.
These workshops were not only fascinating and thought-provoking, but they were also very relevant to the girls’ PSHE lessons. Years 1 to 6 are currently learning about citizenship and the history and tradition of different cultures.
The girls particularly enjoyed being given their own chopsticks and learning how to use them. Some girls acquired the skill straight away!
