Music
The Music Department is a vibrant and exciting place to learn, providing girls at Manor House with a very practical music course. Schemes of work are designed to inspire, boost confidence and, most importantly, provide enjoyment. Music provides students with transferable skills such as the ability to work independently or in a team, analyse music and the context in which it was created and present performances, compositions or ideas confidently to an audience. This makes music a hugely important subject in the girls’ curriculum.
'Spies in Disguise'
The Music Department is frequently experimenting with new ideas and strategies to make learning interesting and exciting. The latest of these is 'Spies in Disguise'. This teaching strategy encourages girls to work independently and share information in a fun and entertaining way. Miss Ward took the strategy a stage further by incorporating props and theme music.
S10 girls researched different aspects of Handel's life and works as part of the Edexcel GCSE course. When the Pink Panther theme started, girls had to put on Groucho glasses and go undercover to read their peers' work. When the music stopped the girls took off their glasses and shared what they had learnt with the class. The girls responded really well to the task and took the spy role quite seriously, making stealthy movements from one computer to the next!
