Drama

Drama at Manor House School is seen as a valuable tool for increasing self-confidence and communication skills, as well as enabling girls to enjoy the sheer thrill and professionalism of being involved in one of our major school productions or Drama evenings.

Drama is a strong subject area throughout the school and a popular and successful GCSE course. All girls are involved with the major Preparatory and Senior School productions each year. There is also the popular, annual, House Arts event, led by Year 10. Our annual Theme Week, takes place at the end of the summer term and allows girls to experience many new skills and challenges. For example, in the 2018 week all girls in Key Stage 3, supported by the Year 10 Drama GCSE group, worked for a day devising and performing a Fashion Show, wearing garments inspired by different subject areas. Theme Week has an Arts biase but is by no means exclusively so.

In September 2020, due to Covid, Manor House School staged their first ever live stream of their Senior School production, ‘Half A Sixpence’ over Facebook. It was watched by families all over the world.

Previous Senior productions include “Barnum”, “My Fair Lady’, Billy Elliot, The Sound of Music, Oliver and Grease. Girls are involved in all aspects of the production from the creation of the scenery and props, to lighting, running the sound desk, music, and, of course, performing. Prep School productions have included “Beauty and the Beast”, “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”.

Girls studying on the GCSE course perform in the annual and national Shakespeare Festival which is a non-competitive event, but requires them to perform an abridged version of a Shakespeare play, at a professional theatre. In November 2018, girls performed “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Leatherhead Theatre.
