Modern Foreign Languages

"I speak English, so I don't have to learn a foreign language...."

Everyone speaks English, right? Well, certainly not everyone speaks English and at Manor House we recognize this. We understand the importance of learning another language and believe firmly that learning another language allows our girls to become global citizens.

The Languages department is very successful and we aim not only to provide enjoyment and a love of languages but also to foster independence of learning and develop a better understanding of the wider world.

The Languages department at Manor House offers French, German, Spanish and Latin from J6 onwards.  In S7 the girls choose two of the three modern languages on offer and either continue with the study of Latin or study Classical Civilization.

In the modern languages classroom, target language is used consistently and reinforced through the teaching of classroom routines.  We regularly take classes to the ICT suite to promote independent learning through the use of language websites and software as well as the Internet to research different cultures and traditions.
