The Graveyard by Rosie Pidgeon (Year 8)
“The ivy silently creeps and crawls, tangling itself around the old and stooping gravestones, getting lost when it reaches the ancient oak, twisting and turning around its tall, plump trunk, manoeuvring its thin body to the very tips of the spindled branches…..”

In the English department we have a dedicated team of teachers who are able to inspire students with the enthusiasm they each have for the subject they teach.  The small class sizes allow our teachers to get to know every student, their academic strengths and weaknesses and, most importantly, their likes and dislikes.  This enables us to tailor the English curriculum to suit each girl and assists us in setting regular measurable targets.  We pride ourselves on our ability to differentiate in this manner.

From Year 9 the girls are divided into 3 sets; this continues throughout their GCSE years.  Those girls who struggle in English will find themselves in a group of as few as eight students.  We work closely with the Learning Support Department, liaising regularly and implementing strategies suggested.  As well as this extra individual attention the English teachers are happy to give up their time during breaks to support girls where necessary.
